Final Digipak In Physical Form

Final Digipak

This is the digital version of the final digipak as well as the CD cover. The purple eye was an important part of the digipak as it is used widely thoughout the final video. To make the digipak more orgianl we decided that the tree on the front cover would be cut out so that the purple eye could be seen behind it.

Final Advert

To make sure that all three ancillary products were similar we decided to have our main star image as the focus of the magazine advert. The purple eye is the centre of the advert catching the audience's attention. IT is also the same design used for the CD cover which helps the products to be more relatable. To create a more orgianl advert we also used some the ink work used on the digipak which again connects the products together. We also included the front of the digipak and a QR code to make it more realistic as a magazine advert.

Digipak Design

To follow our inspiration taken from Katherine Asher we took several screenshots from the video whilst it was in production, Charlotte( group member) then drew each image again using ink pen. Once they had been to touch up any errors which had been made photoshop was used to neaten up the image.  We decided to use eyes as part of the digipak following our star image of a purple eye. We then found some extreme close up of Samways lips which we thought would work well adding just a slight colour on just her lips.

Digipak Experiments

To create our star image throughout the ancillary texts we experimented using different techniques to colour the eye purple. Creating these experiements allowed us to really focus on bringing the star image out in the digipak allowing us to understand exactly what we wanted to be seen. This is the experiment picutres:

Feedback From Rough Cut Video

To allow me to improve the video we asked people for feedback on our video .Using the feedback I am able to change and improve the video. This helps an awful lot receiving feedback.  Here are some of the comments made by people using Social Networking. Using social media allows me to get a wider range of feedback.

We also gave a questionnaire out to the rest of the class to gain extra feedback. This is the feedback we received:

Gender- We asked 8 Males and 3 Females. Some of the answers given were gender specific showing maybe the video is more of one gender.

What was your initial reaction? -  5 people said the video was well edited and 3 people said it actually looked professional edited! 2 people said it was good. We also got quite a few people tell us that it was quite dark and strange, which is the effect we wanted to create throughout the video. There was also someone who said the space in which we filmed the artist was boring. This would be something we would consider to change however it is hard to film the whole thing again.

Would you consider this video having an abstract narrative? - A lot of people said that the lyrics were illustrated so it wasn't an abstract video. However some people were unsure if our video was classed as abstract narrative. This is the effect we wanted to achieve as we wanted to create an uneasy feeling not knowing what is real.

Do you think this video suits an alternative  or Singer/Songwriter genre?-  12 people said that it suited the genre well. One person didn't answer. One person also said "It goes against many conventions which adds to the alternative theme"

Did we use the purple eye enough? - 8 people said we used it enough however 3 people said no which is another factor I will consider when editing the rough cut. It may be more purple eye needs to be used to allow the star image to come through more.

Any other comments?- "Good variety of camera angles with majority neutral/eye level as well as Low and High angles for narrative, the differing angles of the performance added variety"
"Purple eye could be used more throughout the piece, use the slower shots more instead of quick flashes"
"Certain points lip syncing went out needs to be sorted"
"Some of the performance shots are too long"
" There's a bit of lip syncing which is out but apart from that it's good"

Rough Cut

This is the link to our rough cut. It still needs some work as there is a few bits which are just out of sync. Creating a rough cut allows us to gain feedback from people, allowing me to make improvements for the final video.

Production Editing

Once we had created our story boards and had filmed all the footage, I then had to edit it altogether. The first image I had was footage of the clouds moving. However this clip was 9 minutes long. This meant that to allow the clip to fit I changed the speed of the clip. Then to make the clip more interesting I decided to change the colour of the clip to red and also use rhythmic editing for the image to change colour on the piano beat. I did this by using 3 way colour correcter. This is what the clouds looked like after editing them red.

As oussr artist Samways was very busy we decided the best way to film her was to film her on a static camera lip syncing the whole song. Once we had done this I put the whole clip onto Final Cut Pro. I then was able to lock that clip allowing me to add clips over the top so it wasn't all just the artist singing. I put the whole clip into monochrome. This created shadows on our artist giving her a scary look to her which is what we wanted to create. We also filmed extreme close up of her eyes and her lips as well as atmospheric shots in the woods and images of our actress as well giving an uneasy feel to the video. Every shot was put into monochrome following the video of The Wolf which is our main inspiration.
T
To create a star image throughout our video, I then had to edit the close ups of an eye purple. However it was hard to edit the eye because the artist started with her eye closed then opened it during the clip. The best way to edit the eye was using motion. This allowed me to track the eyes movement, making sure in each shot the eye was purple in the right place.  When then decided to repeat the clip several times during the video to make sure that star image came through.

To create a ghostly effect, on some of the clips I decided to overlap the same clip changing the opacity of one of the clips
. I then changed the angle of one of the clips. This can be seen below with an image of the artist playing the piano. Because the two clips are running at the same time, the audience aren't quite sure which clip is the real image allowing us to create an uneasy feel. The reason behind creating an uneasy feel is because My Revenge is based on murder so the lyrics needed to come through using the images. Also because we decided on the Blair Witch Project as our intextuality we needed to almost scare people throughout. We also did this by using an echo effect to create a shaky camera movement throughout the video. We captured alot in the woods which follows the story of the Blair Witch Project.

Throughout the video we have a few clips of our actress running in the woods, as if she is running away from someone. To make the piece more interesting I decided to put the clips into slow motion, allowing the audience to really focus on the detail off the clip, picking up any shadows that may have been created. We used a shaky cam to follow our actress running as this also follows the Blair Witch Project.

Katharine Asher - Digipak Artwork

Katharine Asher is an established 21st century freelance illustrator and designer, specializing in fashion and figurative work. Katharine Asher has worked as a freelancer within illustration, film and design for many years, specialising in figurative work. Her training at Harrow College of Art was mainly focused on strong traditional drawing skills, the ability to think in three dimensions and a thorough understanding of anatomy and movement. She has attracted work from a wide variety of commercial sources from publishing and advertising to film. She uses a very unique style which we think would work really well within our digipak. Below are a few images of Katherine's work. I really like the way she doesn't always finish the brush stroke, yet the strokes she uses are so delicate.

I also found some images that would work really well through our digipak. She always has created extreme close ups of eyes and lips. This is a good way to allow our star image of the purple eye to come through. The drawings are very simplistic which also allows us to show more of the star image as our artist is a very simplistic girl. Using Katharine's style allows us to uses images from the video and create them into our own version of Katharine's work for our digipak and advert.

Digipak Research

My Best Friend Is You is the second album by English singer-songwriter Kate Nash, released in the United Kingdom on 19 April 2010 and elsewhere on 20 April. The album was originally entitled Crayon Full Of Colour but the name was changed due to Paolo Nutini's similar song title at that time, "Pencil full of lead".
On 9 April 2010, Nash took part in a timesonline.co.uk web chat. When asked a question about the album's artwork she replied:
"It's been pretty stressful getting all the artwork together on this album because I've cared so much about it and had so many ideas and wanted it to be perfect for my second record. I worked with a lady called Kate Gibb who does screen printing, we screen printed a bunch of photos and some of my own objects to create collages inspired by images that I collected and loved, they varied from the bauhaus art movement to punk and lo fi record covers because I love the simplicity in those. I've just got through all the final artwork and it was worth the hardwork because I love how it looks. I try to be as involved as possible in every single aspect of what I do so that it represents me properly and because it's fun and I care and I'm a control freak."
The digipak contains a inside booklet of lyrics to the features song and other images and montages.including 2 black and white photos of  herself and scrap booked images of random imagery such as toy dolls and bunny rabbits still using the constant colour pallette that remains within the digipak. The booklets cover is the same as that on the cover so the buyer is able to identify that booklet as being a part of the digipack. The same style is used throughout the digipak and is also used on the advert.

This is the advert for the album My Best friend is you. It uses the image of the front of the digipak. This allows the target audience to connect the poster and the album together. It uses bright colour so stand and and catches peoples eye. It is also not your usual digpak. Most artists appear through their digipak, although Kate Nash does appear because of the scrapbook effect used, it is not always clear what the image is showing. I like the effect and think this would be an interesting way to portray our digipak as it would be an orginal piece.

As you can see the same theme is used throughout
the digipak. Although it is very simple, I really like
this design and allows Kate Nash to create a star
image through the album cover. This is because it
isn't your average digipak which allows her fans to
associate this style to her.

I think that this digipack is very effective as it is simple but effective, by using the same 'scrapbooking' style throughout the digipack and the use of overlapping images and a simple but constant colour palette it stops the digipack from being to overpowering and busy. I like the way she has used random imagery of vintage objects to show aspects of her personality and her music genre.
